Heat stress: a true economic challenge!
Heat stress is having an increasing impact on animal production due to the global climate change. Alone in the US it causes producers losses of more than US$2.5 billion annually. A combination of metabolic heat, reduced sweating ability and skin insulation exacerbates the effects of heat stress. Heat stress leads to increased oxidative stress associated with the production of ROS (reactive oxygen species) and lipid peroxidation. Selenium has antioxidant properties and can effectively counteract the damage caused by oxidative stress.
